Exhibit IT / YOU

Be outspoken, say what you think and show it. DO NOT HIDE.
Be proud of you, whatever you think, its already special since nobody else thinks like you.
That's one of the things i learned a lot this year in Fashiondesign at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie.
The Fashionshow is over, Our five 3th years students are all graduated & pushed out into the world.
The Classroom is cleaned up and must look at this time not at all anymore like a Room where Fashion gets to his point...
It turns into an Exhibiton room. Exhibition of Graduation. Next week it will be the start, the 6th of July is the big Opening.
All the Graduates, of each department, from the Rietveld show their way of thinking and believing in.
In our Fahsionroom Graphicvisions will take over and the Fashiontrends you will find behind the building in a glasshouse next to the water..
Come by and be part, while we exhibit us.

Between that I, Manuela Ernst, 1 year, last year, soon 2nd year , next year, had my first Opening last week in Maison des Cartes in Amsterdam, French Embassy. During 2 months I worked for a french Designer  Francoise André, " auxcorpsanonymes". Inspired by her collection, which carries the story of the Maoriculture and working with Lace for Men, I created my Maori Frogman Look.

For Francoise Andre- Aux Corps Anonymes: I designed in honor of Mana and the Maori culture the Maori Frogman Headpiece:

Neoprene Hoodie with a feather-laceprint gives a surferfeeling and shows masculine power cause of its straight shape.
A Lacehood, embroidered with sparkling Swarovskis in direction of the water spiral Mana, frames the head.
Wool knitted Sweater in purple and coralorange, magic and sea-related , carries the pattern of the wooden figures that Maori use for their spiritual Rituals.

Maori Frogman is full of power and carries the story of your essence in life with it. I love to tell you the story about Mana. The holy river Mana is the essence of my design. "

You can still have a look at the Exhibition " Aux marins célestes till the 22nd of July.
The opening itself was my fist experience of exhibiting myself trough my work  to a public outside of school. It was fashionably good. Good, I took that opportunity and let people see my way of thinking.
Can just advice to the Graduates to enjoy their show next week.

The Show

A year of creating, months of designing, weeks of producing, days of styling...
All  were working towards one day, one show, the fashion show 2011 from the Rietveld Academie.
And then its over...and life goes one.
Bye R for Rietveld Hello R for Reality...
Our 5 graduation students made us all shown that Rietveld Fashion has the power to rock.
It's a small department, but there is some potential. Lots i would say.
We all enjoyed the day, some Backstage pictures for now and soon the pictures of the Show itself.
Check the link: fashion2011.rietveldacademie.nl
We are  already curious about your upcoming collections in the fashionworld out there.
Pablo Londono Sarria, we can follow from now on his new launched website.
I hope the 4 other graduates will keep us updated too.

Fashion Smell

It smells like Fashion..or like grandma's herbs, old memories and blood?

The Rietveld Fashion department had the honor to get a perfume lesson from THE NOSE. The italian, based in Amsterdam, perfume creator, Alessandro Gualtieri, entered sharp at 9 o'clock on the 24th of may in our fashion space and let us smell on each others old pillows, kitchen sauce, old shoes, new shoes, cathair and so on during 5 hours and then he left silent as he came.

We all brought our smells. A week before we knew he would come to us, we prepared and collected smells everywhere.
What is smell exactly? For everyone it has another meaning. Smell can be really radical& rational collected or can be seen as a personal experience, combined with a feeling or a memory that you get when you smell it.

We do not know yet what the secret is to make a fragrance, but we know, it is actually not at all about the fact how you gonna make it...

The interesting thing is again, how do you bring your memory or your feeling, that you have to the others?  How do you make the others want to smell it, want them to have it on them? How do you sell your smell? your taste?
You have to trigger them. But never forget to enjoy it.
Is it, not also the same again, while designing Fashion? I guess it's always about that.
Speak out in some way, which you choose, which makes it your own, what you want to let them feel, or smell or in our case wear, look like.
Smell some Fashion.

Alessandro Gualtieri came in a tasteless room, and he left us in a space full of different perfumenotes, smells of personal experiences and thoughts.
The meeting with the nose was like meeting a magician for me..
He discussed with each of us, one by one, the smells and could read partly our personality with it.
Good smelly experience, the story is not finished with the nose, but it's on us to take it and make something out of it. You should go deep into it, smell it fully and let the others experience the same as you. Share it. Its a honor to smell.

INSIDE- Put your hand in the hole

It happened, finally also the Fashion-Departement got to exhibit.
It was on a Thursday the 28 of April, starting at 4 with a big success Inside and turning around 8, into a chilled Being-Together,mainly Outside the Exhibition.

Of course, when Fashion is doing an Opening, there are not just Drinks, Fingersnacks and nice Socialising, WE WORK. Always. With Passion and Fun.

Our departement turned the whole Opening into a "little" performance which you could not avoid since it happened while you were entering the building.

Going into the black tunnel at the entrance, being asked to put your hand in the hole and leaving the black cage with a nicely printed, fashion-designed bracelet and a wonderful colorful Happy-Fashionnail made by the 2 lovely Girls Nora and Julia from the Graphic-departement (happyfingers.info)

People were surprised, confused and happy, so were we. It was a success.
We were happy to see that they really looked at our Installation of  our Designs from  the assignement: Being in 2 Worlds ( 2nd year) and Running into...( 1 year).

Totally happy nailed, inside and outside, we run into a total feeling of being fashionably successful.

Thank you all so much and please enjoy the Exhibition till the 28 of May in the Space next to the Library.

We say, "No, we are Free and want to have an exhibition as well!"
Come and visit it at the 28th of April at 4 to 8 pm.

Presentation 1st and 2nd Vakjaar Fashion

April 28th  – May 26th
Opening 28th 4 – 8pm
At Public Rietveld

"I'm a city map, but found no home with my very big ego.
It was hiding and showing,
when the outer space insects were hanging from the moon.
Feeling big and small,
I run into time and died on overdone death.
With no light in my coffin,
I'm now hidden between squares and stripes".

Give me some juice!

10:00 19th April 2011 waiting, discussing, drinking coffee, in front of room 103 in the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and then there HE is, he is coming around the corner like he would always be there..
Peter Greenaway! Peter Greenaway was in our school today, for having a talk, giving some inspiration to our fashion departement, specific to the 3th year for their upcoming fashion show.

The whole Fashioncrew: Fashion-Design-graduate-students & teachers, the Graphic-Design-graduationstudents which work for the show with the third year together, plus 3 chosen students from Fashiondesign first and second year and one Fan from Basicyear, followed Peter Greenaway inside the room 103.

Room 103 will be a special one from today on, at least for me.
It was a great experience, although it was not about my show, since I am just in the first year but I am thankful to have been part of that group. Experiencing even all the teachers a bit intimidated. Looking up to someone all together was fun.

Peter Greenaway has it, the power, the dominant, the view trough you.
This man is an Inspiration even when he just asks for some Electricity:
"Give me some Juice" how elegant is that? Saying it while having his glasses between his lips.
Perfect start for the 2 and a half hour discussion which we had this morning in the room 103.

We explained, he listened, asked, confused, pointed out.

You can have a good show, you can have a great concept for that, but how do you make it manifest?
How do you sell yourself?
What I learned again is that Communication is the A from the whole Vocabulary.
We should speak it out what we want to say and not putting to much attention to other things around. Come to the point, but make it  in a sharp way. ( Like Dunchamp, Peter Greenway would say)
Use the Classics from before, but dare to Make your own stuff.
We often stay in our confident zone and let others think for us, like in the Cinema (Text) or in Museum by reading the Legend, we avoid the own thinking.
Make it your own, work on your visual language by using your narrative one:
"Goodbye Textmaster & Hello Imagemaster"
We live in a time of Images, Screens, and Movement.
Fashion is part of it. Fashion is a Style, a Phenomenon of our Environment.
We are the sculptors, who should rule the "Todays Vocabulary", the Screen.

Yes, thank you Peter Greenaway, "Im just from the first year", thats all I could say to you, but I took a lot with me from that day in room 103.

I am curious for the day of the 3th years Fashionshow in June,
it is the day THEYwill Get some Juice!
 Definitely.
